New Orleans

1/31/18: YMSB

So I went to listen in on some mountain music in the dirty south for the first time. Living in Asheville, I saw plenty of live shows with string bands (according to GQ, it's one of ‘coolest city you’ve never been to’). Asheville really expanded my palette in music. Before moving there, I wouldn't have liked this genre.

Even my first time seeing Yonder Mountain String Band at the Orange Peel... the amazing night wasn't necessarily about the music, but about the experience. And sometimes I find myself wondering which is of higher value.

But when I saw them on January 31 at Tipitina's, it was all about the music. Shedding light on my question as to whether the experience or the music is more important in a live show... my New Orleans encounter with YMSB answered my concerns. All about the music.

Before the show, I Instagram messaged the band with a few requests (it worked with the Generationals, so I thought "why not try again..."). They band probably read it and said "Nah, let's have this girl experience some new music."

Needless to say, none of my requests were played. But it turned out to be a blessing!

That's when you know it's a good show. You don't know a single word to any songs, and it was one of the best shows I've ever been to.

I wanted to keep my first concert review short and simple; but just like my previous post, I like to give myself a little metaphor in the writing.

This time, I learned that you shouldn't be disappointed just because a circumstance isn't what you expected... but be ready to experience new things. In my case it turned me on to a whole new genre of music. And discovering new music is, in my opinion, one of the most exciting experiences. You listen to music all day everyday in your work setting... or at least in mine. It can completely change your mood, and for the better.

So keep on listening to the beat, whether it be to a song or change of interest.
